Rites of Passage

The Rachel's Daughters Rites of
Passage Program consists of 12
weekly lessons ("Masomo").

Each lesson ("somo") focuses on
an individual challenge of
growing up a little black girl in
American society.  The "Masomo"
help members of Rachel's
Daughters navigate a hostile
world and find satisfaction
and serenity in their own
sacred spaces.

By reaching back and drawing upon the
wisdom and knowledge of ancestors, the
sponsors of Rachel's Daughters
hope to complete our
mission of encouraging
"A New Generation of Leaders &
Teachers" who are willing
to serve and prepared to lead.

Sample "masomo" include:

  • Healthy, Wealthy, & Wise:
    Nutrition and Whole Body
    Wellness

  • Middle Passage:  Reflection &
    Rededication

  • Killing Us Softly:  Images of
    Black Women in the Media

  • "Sherehe":  Passage Ceremony
    (Final Ceremony based upon
    the traditional African Naming
    Ceremony)

 and much, much more...
